Microneedling Aftercare
The concept of Microneedling is based on the skin’s natural ability to repair itself whenever it encounters physical injury such as cuts, burns and other abrasions. As the Microneedling device moves across the skin, it creates micro-channels into the skin. In response to the perceived “injury,” a cascade of growth factors are released, which in turn triggers new collagen synthesis. By persistently triggering this healing process with a series of Microneedling treatments, the body keeps repairing the skin incrementally. The result is smoother, firmer and younger looking skin.
After Care Instructions:
DAY 1
A sunburn-like effect is normal. Your skin may feel tight, dry or sensitive to touch for the next couple of days. Some redness, swelling may also be present and in some cases, you may experience slight bruising (especially under eye area), that can last for 5-7 days and temporary swelling around eyes for 2-4 days. Note that everyone is different in the results as well as the post treatment recovery period.
-
CLEANSE. Wait a minimum of 4 hours after treatment to cleanse skin.
-
Be sure to wash your hands prior to touching treatment area. Gently massage using a gentle cleanser. A 15-minute shower will help to gently remove serum and dry blood spots after treatment. This will reduce overall downtime.
-
Do not use any powered cleansing brushes like Clarisonic for one-week post treatment.
-
-
SOOTHE. For the next 24 hours, ONLY apply Hyaluronic acid after cleansing.
-
NO sunscreen for the first 24hrs so make sure to stay out of the sun.
-
It is recommended you do not apply makeup for 24 to 72 hours after the procedure. In addition, avoid using a makeup brush, especially if the brush is not clean.
-
AVOID icing on your face and using arnica/bromelain (these may interfere with the natural inflammatory process that’s critical for your skin rejuvenation).
-
IF NEEDED use a painkiller, such as Tylenol, for any soreness.
-
AVOID anti-inflammatory medications for 7 days after the treatment.
-
AVOID strenuous exercises that cause sweating as well as Swimming, Jacuzzis, Saunas, and Steam baths for up to 72 hours. Sweating and Gym environments in general are harmful and filled with bacteria, which may cause adverse reactions in your skin.
-
AVOID any activity involving heat for the first 24 hours.
-
DO sleep on your back with your head elevated to minimize swelling or pain as needed.
DAY 2
After 24 hours following your treatment, you may start using your Sunscreen. Keep in mind that you should continue to use a sunscreen everyday — not only the days following your procedure — as part of your skincare routine to protect your skin further sun damage and collagen breakdown.
DAYS 3-7
After 48 to 72 hours following treatment, you may begin your regular skin care regimen once your skin no longer feels irritated. Flaking may start 3-5 days after the treatment. You’ll notice skin dryness and flaking which is due to an increased turnover of skin cells. DO NOT pick, scratch, or scrub at treated skin!
IMPORTANT: You must allow the old skin to flake off naturally and keep it moisturized at all times. If a more aggressive treatment was performed, you may be instructed to use a more occlusive balm such as Cell Protection Balm.
DAY 5-7
To help dissolve unwanted flaking, reach out to me to schedule a light enzyme facial. For aging and scarring treatments, post treatment skin may benefit from LED Therapy to promote maximum tissue healing, minimize inflammation, and kick start fresh cells. Retinol products may also be slowly introduced at this stage for optimal results. This will continue to stimulate the cell turnover process started by Microneedling.
DAY 14-30 up to 2 YEARS
It is encouraged to avoid direct sun exposure up to ONE MONTH after treatment – exposure to sun results in breakdown of new collagen. Most patients have noticed continued skin improvement over the months following their last treatment. For best results: It is recommended to follow-up and repeat Microneedling treatments every 4-6 weeks, with a series of 3-6 treatments depending on how advanced your concerns may be.
